Short Information about Subject Verb Agreement In English Grammar

When a compound subject contains both a singular and a plural noun or pronoun joined by or or nor, the verb should agree with the part of the subject that is closest to the verb. This is also called the rule of proximity.

  • उदाहरण>>>   The student or the committee members write every day.
  • उदाहरण>>>   The committee members or the student writes every day.

The words each, each one, either, neither, everyone, everybody, anyone, anybody, nobody, somebody, someone, and no one are singular and require a singular verb.

  • उदाहरण>>>   Each of the participants was willing to be recorded.
  • उदाहरण>>>   Neither alternative hypothesis was accepted.
  • उदाहरण>>>   I will offer a $5 gift card to everybody who participates in the study.
  • उदाहरण>>>   No one was available to meet with me at the preferred times.

Noncount nouns take a singular verb.

  • उदाहरण>>>      Education is the key to success.
  • उदाहरण>>>      Diabetes affects many people around the world.
  • उदाहरण>>>      The information obtained from the business owners was relevant to include in the study.
  • उदाहरण>>>      The research I found on the topic was limited.

Some countable nouns in English such as earnings, goods, odds, surroundings, proceeds, contents, and valuables only have a plural form and take a plural verb.

  • उदाहरण>>>      The earnings for this quarter exceed expectations.
  • उदाहरण>>>      The proceeds from the sale go to support the homeless population in the city.
  • उदाहरण>>>      Locally produced goods have the advantage of shorter supply chains.

In sentences beginning with there is or there are, the subject follows the verb. Since there is not the subject, the verb agrees with what follows the verb.

  • उदाहरण>>>      There is little administrative support.
  • उदाहरण>>>      There are many factors affecting teacher retention.

Collective nouns are words that imply more than one person but are considered singular and take a singular verb. Some examples are group, team, committee, family, and class.

  • उदाहरण>>>      The group meets every week.
  • उदाहरण>>>      The committee agrees on the quality of the writing.

However, the plural verb is used if the focus is on the individuals in the group. This is much less common.

  • उदाहरण>>>      The committee participate in various volunteer activities in their private lives.

If the subject is singular, the verb must be singular too.

  • उदाहरण>>>      She writes every day.

If the subject is plural, the verb must also be plural.

  • उदाहरण>>>      They write every day.

Sometimes, however, it seems a bit more complicated than this. When the subject of the sentence is composed of two or more nouns or pronouns connected by and, use a plural verb.

  • उदाहरण>>>      The doctoral student and the committee members write every day.
  • उदाहरण>>>      The percentage of employees who called in sick and the number of employees who left their jobs within 2 years are are reflective of the level of job satisfaction.

When there is one subject and more than one verb, the verbs throughout the sentence must agree with the subject.

  • उदाहरण>>>      Interviews are one way to collect data and allow researchers to gain an in-depth understanding of participants.
  • उदाहरण>>>      An assumption is something that is generally accepted as true and is an important consideration when conducting a doctoral study.

When a phrase comes between the subject and the verb, remember that the verb still agrees with the subject, not the noun or pronoun in the phrase following the subject of the sentence.

  • उदाहरण>>>      The student, as well as the committee members, is excited.
  • उदाहरण>>>      The student with all the Master’s degrees is very motivated.
  • उदाहरण>>>      Strategies that the teacher uses to encourage classroom participation include using small groups and clarifying expectations.
  • उदाहरण>>>      The focus of the interviews was nine purposively selected participants.

When two or more singular nouns or pronouns are connected by or or nor, use a singular verb.

  • उदाहरण>>>      The chairperson or the CEO approves the proposal before proceeding.

When there are two Subjects in a sentence and they are not in the same Number, then we must have to use separate Auxiliaries (is, are, am, was, were, have, has) for both of them.

उदाहरण>>>
  • Incorrect- Three- killed and one were injured.
  • Correct- Three were killed and one was injured.

A single Verb should be made to serve two Subjects, only when the form of Verb is same for both the subjects.

उदाहरण>>>
  • Incorrect- I am seventeen years old and my sister fourteen.
  • Correct- I am seventeen years old and my sister is fourteen.

Two auxiliaries can be used with one principal Verb, only when the form of the principal Verb is appropriate to both the auxiliaries.

उदाहरण>>>
  • Incorrect- He never has, and never will take such strong measures.
  • Correct- He never has taken, and never will take such strong measures.

When there is only one auxiliary to two principal Verbs it should be correctly associated with the both.

उदाहरण>>>
  • Incorrect- Ten candidates have passed one failed.
  • Correct- Ten candidates have passed, one has failed.

A Past Tense in the main clause should be followed by a Past Tense in the subordinate clause.

उदाहरण>>>
  • Incorrect- He succeeded because he works hard.
  • Correct- He succeeded because he worked hard.

A Past Tense in main clause may be followed by a Present Tense in the subordinate clause when the subordinate clause expresses a universal truth.

उदाहरण>>>
  • Incorrect- Our teacher said that the earth moved round the sun.
  • Correct- Our teacher said that the earth moves round the sun.
