What is UPSC IAS Exam-

IAS (Indian Administrative Service) was formerly known as Imperial Civil Service (ICS) is the Civil Services Examination and one of the toughest competitive exams in India. It is conducted by the Union Public Service Commission for the recruitment of officers for the All India Administrative Civil Service.

Founded: 1858 (as Imperial Civil Service) January 26, 1950 (as Indian Administrative Service)

• Exam type- Pen and paper-based (offline)

• Number of services- 24

• Number of attempts- 6 attempts

IAS Prelims Exam Pattern

• Exam Mode-    Offline 

• Number of Papers    General Ability test (GAT) and Civil Service Aptitude Test (CSAT) 

• Number of Questions    Paper 1- 80; Paper 2-100  

• Question Paper Type    Multiple Choice Questions  

• IAS Prelims Total Marks    400 

• Nature of Exam    Qualifying 

• Exam Duration    2 hours each, +20 minutes for blind students 

• Exam Language    English and Hindi

IAS Pre Exam Mark Detail

• Each question in General Studies (GS) paper carries 2 marks.

• Each question in Civil Service Aptitude Test paper carries 2.5 marks.

• For each question for which a wrong answer has been given by the candidate, one-third (0.33) of the marks assigned to that question will be deducted as penalty.

• If a candidate gives more than one answer, it will be treated as a wrong answer even if one of the given answers happens to be correct and the penalty will be the same as mentioned above for that question.

• If a question is left blank, i.e. no answer is given by the candidate, there will be no penalty for that question.

• Candidates will have to score a minimum of33 % to qualify for the exam.
